HAPPEN Primary School Network Wales

Background

As a Centre, our workplace health research aims to identify some of the key health challenges faced in the workplace environment.

HAPPEN is an established school network that brings together education, health and research to help schools have a better understanding of pupil’s physical, psychological, emotional and social health.   Since lockdown, as part of our ‘Workplace Health’ work package, HAPPEN has been carrying out research to gain a better understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on the health and wellbeing of primary school staff in Wales, to gain an understanding and to help inform decision making.

Research

Initially, HAPPEN asked primary school pupils (aged 8 – 12) to take part in their ‘HAPPEN at Home Survey’, to understand and identify the impact of lockdown on young people’s health and wellbeing.

Then, with the reopening of schools in June, HAPPEN introduced the ‘Return to School Survey’ to gather opinions of staff on their experiences of returning to school.

The survey was completed by 211 primary school staff, including headteachers, teachers, teaching assistants and support staff, across Wales. Due to the timing and rapid response required before school return, a report was produced in August 2020 to relay initial findings and staff views’ before the return to school.

HAPPEN have just launched a new survey to continue to gather the views of teachers and pupils.  This survey focuses  on the realities of being back in school fulltime during the pandemic.
